Smets
Jan Smets began his musical studies on the euphonium under Argo
Penné at Tongeren Music Academy. From an early age he was
prizewinner in many competitions. In 1990 he was voted ‘Belgian
brass musician of the year’.
He then studied at the Lemmensinstituut Leuven, in the class of
Michel Tilkin's, where he was awarded the " Master degree
for trombone with ‘great distinction’.
After a brief period as solo trombone with the Vlaams Radio Orkest,
Jan then became solo trombone with the Orkest van de Koninklijke
Muntschouwburg in Brussels.
As a chamber musician he is attached to the brass quintet of the
Munt and the Prometheus Ensemble. Since December 2001 he is teacher
of trombone at the Royal Flemish Conservatoire of the Hogeschool
Antwerpen.
